2016 Scotland road trip plans

Touring Scotland in a converted Volkswagen T5 Campervan

After my road trip on the Wild Atlantic Way in the Republic of Ireland last March I really warmed to the idea of travelling from place to place an experiencing several different towns in one trip. In Ireland I used a hire car and simply stayed at different B and B's, so I thought I would take it one step further and hire a VW Campervan instead! This is something I've never done before so I do not know what to expect but it is bound to be an adventure an I cannot wait to get on the open road up to bonny Scotland!

Hopefully I will see the stunning scenery of Loch Lomond

The Campervan - When searching for van hire we came across a wonderful website called Camperbug (link) - This is a site where private Campervan owners can put their van up for hire – You pay a small admin fee and can book everything through the website while having contact with the van owners too. I cannot recommend this website enough, and if you are looking to hire a campervan in the UK then this is the place to find one! There is a great selection with Campervan's for hire all over the country.

Our Campervan - Clyde!

The Campervan we chose is called Clyde and it is a Volkswagen T5 – It looks fantastic and has plenty of facilities including a gas hob, a fridge, a TV with DVD player and of course sleeps 4 people! I have no idea what to expect; will I be ok with the Electric hook up? Will we be warm enough? Will I be ok driving a van? So many questions! If anyone else has had an experience with a converted campervan or just caravanning in general I would love to hear from you.

The Route - I have changed our route plan several times and have settled on mainly the west coast – I have been told there is some beautiful scenery and beaches in this area of Scotland.

  • Stop 1 – Keswick, The Lake District
  • Stop 2 – Loch Lomond
  • Stop 3 – Arisaig, Highlands
  • Stop 4 – Balmacara, Highlands
  • Stop 5 – Keswick, The Lake District
The route

These stops should give us a good variety of things to see and do, while also giving us some rest time inbetween so we are not on the go all the time. I hope to see Eilean Donan Castle, Old Man of Storr on Skye and enjoy what the local villages have to offer. If you have any tips or advice then drop me a line!
